– Valid EASA CPL ME/IR or ATP.
– 700+ Total Time (>100 Hrs IFR inc 40 Hrs ME).
– Valid EASA Part-MED Class 1.
– ICAO Level 4 English proficiency.
– Multi-Crew Co-ordination certificate.

Eagle European supports Solent Airport at Daedalus Runway Opening March 2015

As a long standing member of the airfields community, Eagle European was proud to support the opening of the new Runway at Lee-On0Solent on March 10th 2015.

The £1.5m project funded by Fareham Borough Council has seen the main runway resurfaced, repairs to taxiways and installation of ducking to prepare for future runway lights. Fareham Borough Council executive leader Sean Woodward and Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage helped to secure a total of £8.3m in investment for the former RNAS airfield. The investment includes the Solent Enterprise Zone which houses Fareham College’s new £12m centre for advanced engineering skills training (CEMAST).


Situated close to Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire, HMS Daedalus was one of the key airfields operated by the Fleet Air Arm. Prior to the Second World War, the airfields primary use was to facililitate the training of Royal Air Force pilots and crew in sea planes. In the 1930’s the airfield was transferred to the control of the admirality, and as such it became the home of the Flag Officer Air. At the outbreak of WW2, it was recognised that Daedalus could play an important role in the war effort, and it became home to a number of sqaudrons. Over the course of the airfields military use, the airfield was home to over 180 Naval Air Squadrons.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward, who flew on the first official flight, said: “The upgraded runway is an important step towards gaining the CAA licence that will allow a greater variety of planes to use the airfield and boost the already healthy aviation community on the Solent Enterprise Zone.  When we take ownership of the site we will be responsible for investment over the life of the Enterprise Zone totalling some £50,000,000 which will boost the local economy.  This is in addition to the investment being made by Hampshire County Council and the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership in new roads to improve access to the Zone. ”


The Official Runway Opening was a Lee Flying Association initiative delivered by a team from FBC, HCA, RCA and Fareham College whose new £12m advanced engineering college is now open at Daedalus with 900 enrolled students.  Flat Six Aviation provided the specially-requested Cirrus SR20 for the official flight, flown by instructor Theo Amer.  Eagle European AOC flew Fareham’s Mayor and Mayoress, media and college engineering students on local flights in our C421 Golden Eagle. Hampshire Aeroplane Club flew the C172 Air-to-Ground camera-ship. Aviation tenants provided numerous aircraft open hangars for guests and media to view on the South East apron, where Aerotech (Solent), Bournemouth Avionics and LFA hangars were opened for the visitors and college students.

Since the revamp of the airfield, it has become a key part of the regional economy, supporting an exciting range of businesses both from an aviation perspective, and non-aviation organisations, with two business parks.

Magnificent men and flying machines

One June 4 there was a fly-past of eight (DC3/C-47/LI-2) Dakota aircraft, from eight countries including America, Finland and Hungary.

The Memorial Airborne Invasion Dakota formation took off from Daedalus aerodrome at Lee-on-the-Solent and flew north to pass over Southwick House, the D-Day headquarters, then south over Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight and across the Channel to Normandy. There the planned drop by 100 parachutists at Carentan had to be postponed because of high winds, but the crowds were thrilled by the fly-past of the largest Dakota formation seen in Europe for many years. Nine more Dakota para-dropping flights were completed across Normandy between June 5 and 8 with more than 650 individual jumps made.

The cross-channel invasion flight had been preceded on the evening of June 3 by a public seafront D-Day 70th Memorial Service organised by Pat Prior of the Royal British Legion’s Lee branch. The service was followed by a memorial flypast organised by Lee Flying Association which included the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster and Dakota, and two Spitfires led by a P51 Mustang. Those three aircraft represented the RAF, Fleet Air Arm, Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Navy – Spitfires, Seafires and Mustangs that flew 435 missions over Normandy from Daedalus on D-Day. Closing the Flypast was a poppy-drop from a Dakota which had flown from America to take part, led by a Beech Expeditor in Fleet Air Arm colours as flown at Daedalus in 1944.

The whole event was organised by the LFA led by Jon Butts, the chairman of the Daedalus D-Day 70th Airmen & Airborne Commemoration. His second-in-command was Lt-Cdr Geoffrey Pell who was in command before the Royal Navy withdrew leaving the aerodrome in civilian use. There were also 80 air and ground crew plus 100 parachutists from the Round Canopy parachute team from all over the world, including New Zealand, who needed accommodation on June 2 and 3. They were put up by local people who had offered up to 250 beds for each of those nights. This was a major accomplishment for the team led by Jock Thompson and Stuart Ashworth of Lee-on-the-Solent Residents’ Association. The LFA was the prime sponsor of the commemoration and, with help of members and Kirsty Thompson, raised the additional funds and goods in kind required from local companies. One woman donated £500 to the fund as her late father-in-law was Vice Admiral Richard Bell-Davies VC. He died in 1966 aged 79 at Haslar Naval Hospital. It was a fantastic feat of organisation and the LFA, aerodrome and local community did itself proud. At the end of accounting there was a surplus of £1,895 which was increased to £1,944.66 and donated to the Royal British Legion.

A presentation took place last Saturday at the LFA headquarters, a D-Day Seafire hangar at the aerodrome. Guests of honour including veterans Tony Mullins, a Seafire engineer at Daedalus on D-Day, Sylvia Bell, a VAD Nurse at RN Hospital Haslar on D-Day and, Maurice Bell a parachutist who served in the Far East from 1941.


Eagle European flew Mr Bell and D-Day 70th volunteers on a local flight in their Cessna 421 Golden Eagle, and Maurice had no need of a parachute on this occasion. In the main picture we see the Daedalus D-Day 70th flight over Portsmouth Harbour on June 2, 2014.


D-Day 70th 2014

The 70TH is the last major anniversary commemoration that D-Day veterans are expected to be able to attend, due failing health and difficulties travelling. Nonetheless, those that can are making a special effort to attend 70th Commemorations in Normandy and elsewhere around the world.

In June 2014 it will be exactly 70 years since the largest invasion in history took place. On D-Day; the 6th of June 1944, in almost 7,000 ships the Allied armies transported over 160,000 young men to the beaches of Normandy in France, to fight to liberate Europe of Nazi occupation.

This seaborne invasion was preceded by the landing of 23,400 Allied airborne forces behind enemy lines. They parachuted from the famous Douglas C-47 Dakota – the workhorse of the Allied Air Forces – and landed in Horsa and Waco assault gliders.  They raised havoc and suffered great losses to secure the flanks of the invasion beachhead and free the paths inland, enabling the liberators from the sea to fight the Battle of Normandy (6 Jun – 20 Aug 1944).

Today, twenty-seven war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 of the fallen from both sides. Between 15,000 and 20,000 French civilians were also lost their lives. Thousands more fled their homes to escape the fighting.  The Liberations of Normandy in 1944 and of Europe in 1945 were achieved only at great sacrifice.  Many of those who died were still very young, and died without seeing their twentieth birthday.

LFALinkLogoSmall  LEE FLYING ASSOCIATION (LFA) is leading the UK element of this International D-Day 70th Commemoration having proposed a 2014 Cross-channel Memorial Airborne Invasion formation flight originating from Daedalus Aerodrome, Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire.  LFA have invited the Round Canopy Parachute Team (RCPT) to gather the parachutists and WW2 veteran aircraft participating in their “Dakotas Over Normandy” 2014 project at Lee-on-Solent and to launch Memorial Airborne Invasion parachute drop to Normandy on the 4th June, 2014.

 LFA Chairman Mr Jon Butts has formed the “Daedalus D-Day 70th” project team of LFA members, local organisations, volunteers and sponsors. The poject team is preparing to host the Memorial Airbone Invasion participants overnight on the 2nd & 3rd June – organised by Lee-on-Solent Residents Association’s Jock Thompson and hold a public Memorial Service on the evening of the 3rd June organised by Pat Prior of the Royal British Legion, prior to the first cross-channel formation Dakota air-drop since WW2, delivering parachutists to a D-Day 70th Memorial Commemoration in Normandy on 4th June 2014.

The Project Team logo reflects the parachute and glider airborne invasions which commenced on the 5th June 1944 ahead of the seaborne assault. British and Canadian forces landed north of Caen to secure the east flank of the 50 mile invasion beachhead; the Americans secured the west flank on the Cherbourg Peninisla. The Spitfire represents all those that flew and supported 435 D-Day missions flown from Daedalus. The first two aircraft over the beaches at dawn were Spitfires from Lee – the busiest south coast airfield engaged in battle on D-Day.
